General Information about 2nd Grade Music

In 2nd grade music, the students will sing, dance and play percussion instruments. These experiences will include a blend of improvisation and student creation in addition to traditional songs. Rhythmically, students will read and perform half notes, half rests, quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes.  The students will learn to identify form in music. The students will also learn to perform repetitive patterns (ostinatos) while other students perform contrasting patterns.

Grades: Every 9 weeks, 2nd grade students are given grades for Rhythm and Pitch. While grades are only given for rhythm and pitch, a wide array of skills and concepts will be incorporated into this class.

Learning Skills and Behaviors:
In my experience, the vast majority of students follow my rules and procedures consistently. I reward this good behavior by allowing students to wear ties and super hero capes. Students who demonstrate inappropriate behaviors will have their behavior grade lowered from S (Successful) to P (Progressing). If a student demonstrates frequent or consistent inappropriate behaviors, the student’s grade will be lowered to N (Needs Improvement).  My rules and procedures are posted in both word and picture form in my classroom.
